Academic from Manado State University (UNM) Manado, North Sulawesi, Prof. Dr. Otto Cornelius (OC) Kaligis stated that they should stop slandering the second President Soeharto because he is considered to have rendered services to the country.

“The ASEAN community is amazed by Pak, when he was sick, former Singaporean President Lee Kwan Yu took the time to visit him at Pertamina Hospital,” said OC Kaligis in Jakarta, Monday.

Kaligis said that Pak Harto’s leadership was recognized by the world and several times world leaders gathered in Bali to discuss global issues.

The problem is related to the Plenary Meeting of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) on Wednesday (29/9/2024) which agreed to remove Soeharto’s name which was written in article 4 of MPR Decree No.11 of 1998 concerning the Implementation of a Clean State Free from Corruption, Collusion and Nepotism (KKN).

According to him, at the beginning of Soeharto’s administration, inflation was successfully reduced from 360 percent to 10 percent and managed to meet the needs of clothing, food and rehabilitation of various economic facilities and infrastructure, even exports increased.

He said that some parties who often accompanied the second president and were once legal counsel that a visit to the Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland on June 14, 2000 stated that Soeharto’s case must be stopped, until he recovers.

“This was also a consideration of the Indonesian Supreme Court, just like the opinion of the UN Human Rights Commission,” he said.

Kaligis said that Pak Harto’s case had been stopped (SP3) only for political reasons, the case was reopened and forced, even though at that time Pak Harto was sick and had lost his memory.

Regarding the Trisakti case, he said, it had nothing to do with Pak Harto, even President Soeharto stepped down to avoid more student victims.

In Pak Harto’s era, there were no daily demonstrations including the direct appointment of mayors, regents, and governors, this could certainly save the state budget.

Kaligis conveyed the opinion to those who do not understand what Pak Harto did during his administration to stop throwing slander.

According to him, as a party who was once Pak Harto’s lawyer and communicated directly in order to defend him, all legal events were made into a book.
